Lisa Bohman Egbert, MD, was elected speaker of the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association in June 2023. Dr. Egbert, who has been attending AMA meetings since her first year of medical school, has held numerous leadership positions that reflect her commitment to organized medicine and span every stage of her career. She began by serving as the student representative to the AMA Women in Medicine Advisory Panel and then as a member of the governing councils of both the AMA Resident Physician Section and later the Young Physician Section (YPS), including serving as chair of the AMA-YPS. Subsequently, she served on the board of AMPAC, the AMA’s political action committee, and on the AMA Council on Medical Service before her election in 2019 as vice speaker of the AMA House of Delegates and as a member of the AMA Board of Trustees.

Dr. Egbert is privileged to represent the AMA on the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation and the AMA Foundation Boards of Directors. She is a liaison to the AMA Litigation Center Executive Committee and the AMA Private Practice Physicians Section.

In addition to her involvement at the national level, Dr. Egbert has been a strong advocate at the state and local levels. She is a past president of Ohio’s Montgomery County Medical Association and the Ohio State Medical Association.

A born and bred Buckeye, Dr. Egbert graduated summa cum laude and with honors from The Ohio State University earning her undergraduate and medical degrees. She is a lifetime member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association and a President’s Club member. Dr. Egbert, also serves on the board of the Buckeye Leadership Fellows, a novel leadership development program designed to empower a cohort of students with leadership skills developed outside the classroom.

Over 27 years ago, Dr. Egbert began her solo practice in obstetrics and gynecology and absolutely loved providing that personal touch in caring for her patients. Sadly, despite making every effort to keep the doors open, including using her personal savings, she closed her practice at the end of 2024 due to the more than 30% decline in payments to physician practices from Medicare and other insurance carriers. She has shared this painful experience publicly with the fervent hope the broken Medicare system will be fixed. She continues to be a fierce advocate for physicians, especially those in private practice.

Dr. Egbert has been happily married to the “other” Dr. Egbert for 35 years. Her husband, Brad, is an anesthesiologist. They have two sons and a daughter and have recently welcomed two daughters-in-law to the family.
